Stylus on the white wax cast of a record

Thelonius Monk, Thelnius Mnk, Thlns Mk, Tls M, T is a sound installation consisting of a turntable, speakers, an amplifier, and a wax cast of the jazz musician Thelonious Monk’s record Thelonious Monk. The cast is played over and over on the turntable. As it plays, the scraping stylus gradually wears away the wax. With each playback, the information inscribed in the record changes.

Thelonius Monk, Thelnius Mnk, Thlns Mk, Tls M, T focuses on the continual transformation of what is heard. Through the stylus’s abrasive action, the music is not destroyed; instead, something new is added to it.
