Elko Braas, The outer limits - please remain seated, 2026

The Outer Limits—Please Remain Seated is an approximately thirty-minute audio piece in seven chapters. In it, a clone of my voice takes on the role of an entity that controls the listeners’ perception. It decides what is heard, when pauses occur, and which voices sound familiar. The control announcement from the 1960s science fiction series of the same name becomes the voice of an artificial intelligence. From there, the piece leads to the walls of the Kassel Correctional Facility: field recordings near the prison fence, bees, construction sites, and the bike ride home intersect with a men’s choir singing “Freedom” and voices recounting life on the inside. These voices remain synthetic—an exploration of the figure of the prisoner through a voice that is not one’s own. The Outer Limits asks where the boundaries of one’s own perception lie when machines generate voices, and who determines what is heard and what is not. The piece has been presentet in 2026 at the CPDP in the radioformat AVATAR.FM. It was produced in the context of the project SENTIMENT.
